How Canvas calculates your grade

Canvas uses weighted assignment groups. Every assignment belongs to a group (Homework, Quizzes, Exams…), and each group is worth a set percentage of your final grade. Canvas works in two steps:

1. Inside each group, your average is the sum of points earned divided by the sum of points possible. Work marked missing counts as zero; excused work is removed completely.
2. Across groups, each group average is multiplied by its weight and the results are added together. Groups with no graded work yet are left out of your current grade — which is why this calculator asks you to mark unfinished categories as "Not graded yet".

The formula, with a worked example

Grade = Σ (category score × category weight) ÷ total weight of graded categories

Say you have Homework at 92% (weight 20), Quizzes at 85% (weight 15), and a Midterm at 78% (weight 25). Your grade so far is (92×20 + 85×15 + 78×25) ÷ 60 = 5065 ÷ 60 = 84.4% — a B. Now add a final worth 40% and set your target to 90%: the calculator solves (90×100 − 5065) ÷ 40 = 98.4% needed on the final. Try it above — the sample data button loads exactly this course.

Where to find your weights in Canvas

Open your course and click Grades in the left-hand menu. If your instructor uses weighted groups, the weight appears next to each assignment group name (for example "Homework 20%"). Your syllabus lists the same weights. If your course is points-based instead, put every assignment in one group at 100% — the math is the same.

What-if grades: Canvas's feature vs this calculator

Canvas has a built-in "What-If Grades" tool on the Grades page, but it works one assignment at a time and resets easily. The Needed on remaining work card above does the opposite job: set a target grade, mark everything unfinished as "Not graded yet", and it solves for the single average you need across all remaining work — finals, projects and homework combined.

Common mistakes

Weights that don't total 100%. Your categories plus the final should add to 100 — the calculator warns you when they don't.
Mixing points and percentages. Enter category scores as percentages (87, not 87/100).
Forgetting dropped grades. If your course drops the lowest quiz or homework, tick that category's Drop box.
Comparing the wrong grade. Your "current grade" excludes the final on purpose. Compare it with your target only after entering the final's weight.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my calculated grade different from what Canvas shows?

Usually one of three reasons: your instructor drops the lowest score in a group (tick Drop here to mirror it), some assignments are excused or hidden, or your course uses total points instead of weights (use one group at 100%).

Does Canvas count ungraded assignments as zero?

Canvas shows two views. The current grade counts only graded work. If you uncheck "Calculate based only on graded assignments", you see the total grade, which treats ungraded work as zero. This calculator shows both ideas: current grade from graded categories, and a projection that includes your remaining work.

What if my course doesn't use weighted groups?

Use a single category at 100% weight and enter your overall points percentage — sum of earned ÷ sum of possible × 100.

Is anything saved or uploaded?

No. Everything is stored only in your own browser (local storage) so your course is here when you come back. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I use this for Blackboard, Brightspace or another LMS?

Yes — the weighted-average math is the same. LMS-specific versions are on the way; meanwhile the weighted grade calculator works for any syllabus, and the final grade calculator answers the single-exam question in three inputs.
