Weighted grades vs total points — which does your class use?

Weighted: work is grouped into categories (Homework 20%, Exams 50%…). Each category's percentage is multiplied by its weight. A 100% on a small-weight quiz moves your grade far less than the same score on a heavily weighted exam.
Total points: no categories — every point counts the same. Your grade is simply total earned ÷ total possible × 100. To use this calculator for a points course, use one category at 100% weight.

Check your syllabus: if it lists percentages next to categories, you're weighted. If it lists point totals (e.g. "1,000 points for the course"), you're on total points.

Worked example

Homework 85% × 20% = 17.0 · Midterm 78% × 30% = 23.4 · Final 91% × 50% = 45.5 → 85.9% — a B. Notice the final alone contributes more than homework and midterm combined would at half weight — that's the whole point of weighting, and why your study time should chase weight, not points.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade by hand?

Multiply each category's percentage by its weight (as a decimal), then add: 85×0.20 + 78×0.30 + 91×0.50 = 85.9%.

My weights don't add up to 100%. Is that wrong?

Mid-term it's normal — some categories may not exist yet. The calculator normalizes using the weights of graded categories for your current grade, and warns you about the total.

Can a category score be over 100%?

Yes — extra credit can push a category above 100, and the calculator accepts it.
