How it works

Your course grade is a weighted average: everything so far counts for part of it, the final counts for the rest. Because the final's weight is fixed by your syllabus, there is exactly one score that lands you on your target:

Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight

Worked example: you're carrying 87.4% into a final worth 25%, and you want to finish with 90%. Your current work contributes 87.4 × 0.75 = 65.55 points, so the final must supply 24.45 of its 25 points: (90 − 65.55) ÷ 0.25 = 97.8%. Tough — but now you know, and you can decide whether to chase the A or protect the B+.

How to read your result

0% or less — already secured; the final can't pull you below your target.
1–70% — comfortable with steady prep.
70–85% — achievable with focused work on high-yield topics.
85–100% — demanding; near-perfect performance needed.
Over 100% — mathematically out of reach on the final alone. That is useful information: shift effort to extra credit, remaining assignments, or a course where the grade is still movable.

One thing no calculator can know: your instructor's rounding policy. An 89.5% becomes an A− in some classes and stays a B+ in others — check your syllabus before betting on a round-up.

If you still have homework, projects or a midterm left — not just the final — the three-input version is too simple. Use the full weighted calculator below: mark everything unfinished as "Not graded yet" and it solves for the average you need across all remaining work.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my current grade and the final's weight?

Your current grade is in your grade portal (Canvas, Blackboard, PowerSchool…). Use the grade before the final — if the portal already counts an ungraded final as zero, ask your instructor for your pre-final average. The final's weight is in your syllabus, under Grading or Assessment.

What if I need more than 100%?

Your target can't be reached through the final alone. Options: extra credit, a grade review on work you believe was marked unfairly, or a lower but still worthwhile target.

Can a final ever save a failing grade?

If it carries enough weight, yes. Example: current 52%, final worth 40%, passing is 60% → you need (60 − 52×0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 72% on the final.
